The Madness of King George [Blu-ray]

So historically I am not sure how much of this is real but it certainly feels that way. I do know that King George was a loon and I have no doubt at all that this is a true story. with todays science I am certain that they would have found some kind of medical reason which I think they did have some kind of diagnosis die to something they had found out about his urine. Aside from that, let me tell you that the acting from this entirely British cast is superb and I love each and every moment of this movie. Nigel Hawthorne is great as the King, Helen Mirren as his Queen who loves him, Ian Holm as the doctor who tries to help his Mental problems and Rupert Everett as the ambitious son who wants dad gone. I love Rupert Graves as the only man who was all for The King however he could.

Well written and acted, Hawthorne and Mirren give wonderful performances here. Although the comedic twists that Hawthorne brought to many of his roles (such as his unequalled Orgon in Moliere's "Tartuffe") are not so evident here, enough sparks shine out to lighten what is otherwise a dark tragedy. Mirren's Charlotte is an attractively sympathetic character, tossed about by events, handlers and family who have ulterior motives. The film looks very good on Blu-Ray (better than earlier transfers). Worth a watch for anyone interested in British (and American) history.

Terrific tale of a period when the king of England went insane and of the machinations of the party in power to keep it a secret while the opposition and the conniving Prince of Wales strive to take over. More than that, a moving study of personal suffering and the ghastly medical practices of the time. Lavish production, brilliant script, first-rate acting, lovely period music, a fascinating, ravishing film.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. It is well worth the look for a chapter of American & British history not many people know. George III "lost" the colonies. This could explain why.

One of the great 'period' movies of all time; fantastic actors and performances and a great script. Nobody does this sort of thing like the Brits!
