Mine has the smell, as well. It smells like they have been placed directly next to an intense smoky fire/campfire/bonfire. The boxes and door stops smell this way. Exactly what my hair and clothes would smell like after camping and standing very close to the campfire.Definitely loud. I did have to take the battery out to shut the noise off. I did turn it off, but as soon as I turned it back on it started shrieking again.Definitely works, but not sure if will be exactly what I need.ADDENDUM:I looked up the location of where this was sent from. There was a fire at the Amazon Distribution Center late November 2016, "fire units worked quickly to contain the fire. Damage was reportedly contained to the compactor, although officials say the smoke from the fire was difficult to exhaust due to the size of the building." So, it is not the fault of the seller or the product itself, just one of those things that happen.

Oh yeah, these work. I am an old lady & we had some break-ins nearby so I got these. I placed them in front of my doors after setting the switch & went to bed. My daughter came over (she has a key) & one went off screaming. It caused her to scream & jump backwards in terror & she nearly fell off the small porch! It like to woke the neighborhood with it's high pitched scream. It was perfect. In the morning you slide the switch over first (they are delicate. I picked it up the first morning thinking I'd turn it off once I had it on the table nearby where I store it, but it went off immediately & scared the crud out of me too. Turn them off first, then pick them up. Reverse when you put them down at night). A cheap way to feel safe & keep grandsons out when you're sleeping.

I guess I'm lucky. Mine didn't have much in terms of smell at all. I must admit, I'm not using this in it's intended use, but for my needs, it's perfect. I use it on my sliding doors. I have the usual jam stick to stop sliding doors. But I want an audible alarm as well. I used double side tape to tape it against the back of the sliding door. When opened, the jam stick pushes on the actuator and the alarm sounds. It works perfect.In specific to the unit. There's an on/off switch in the back and a sensitivity level on the side. There's high, mid and low sensitivities. I find that high sensitivity level tends to false all the time, and that there is no discernible difference between the mid and low sensitivity.

Very simple to use and has 3 sensitivity settings The bottom has a grip rubber pad that prevents the doorstop from sliding as the door is swung open and also works well on carpeting. One of my doorways is high enough above the floor that the door swings over the doorstop without setting off the alarm, so I have to use a small piece of 1x2 wood approximately 3 inches long placed on top of the slanted lever--the alarm works well this way. Obviously, this door alarm is useful only when one is at home, or can be used on other doorways than the primary doorway for entering and exiting one's home where a different type of alarm would be needed.

Product arrived promptly and worked as expected, BUT, for us they were way too LOUD and there was no way to adjust the volume. They would be great if you want a loud alarm. We were planning to use them to wake my sleepwalking son before he got out of the house, but they were too startlingly loud for us. I you want them for other purposes, they would be great.

These are super easy to use. They are very loud. You will hear anyone who opens the door. The only issue I had was the smell. They smell pretty bad at first like rubber or plastic. With that being said, I have a very sensitive nose. I put them in the garage for over a week!

It works. Its loud. Its easy to use. Yes, the item and packaging smells really bad when you open it. One should open it outside and let it air out for a few days before using.

These work great. On some floors it will slide instead of staying put and the alarm will not go off even on high sensitivity. Had to put cabinet liner on the bottom.
